Background & Genesis

How do you interpret the charms of Taiwan? Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) is your first stop, where Taiwan meets the skies. Although Taiwan's 23 million people comprise only 0.3% of the world's population, TTIA is the world's 11th largest provider of air passenger services. In terms of area, Taiwan likewise accounts for only 0.02% of the world's surface area, but TTIA handles the 5th largest international freight volumes in the world. Looking at the global air transport market, it is clear that Taiwan and the airport have entered the big leagues.

TTIA shoulders the important responsibility of being the nation's gateway, and it has welcomed the challenge of meeting the highest-level service-quality benchmarks. Over the last decade, the airport's passenger numbers have increased 100%, and its air cargo volume has increased 40%. Effective and forward-thinking operations have supported rapid growth. Amid the rapid growth of air-transport demand, the airport has continually been launching new construction projects to break through capacity limitations and to improve operational efficiencies. TTIA served 46.53 million travelers and 256,000 flights in 2018. Meanwhile, its air cargo surpassed 2.3 million metric tons. All three figures represented new records.

Amid the fast-growing economy and air transportation in the Asia Pacific region, TTIA as Taiwan's important gateway to the world should keep up with this growth trend and keep in step with the times. To strengthen TTIA, enhance national competitiveness, boost the development of the International Airport Park Area and Taoyuan Aerotropolis, and in turn energize regional industries and economy into prosperity.

As for the prospect in 2042 of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Park Master Plan, TTIA's passenger volumes is expected to double and reach the scale of 86.6 million passengers and 5 million metric tons. To achieve this objective of the Master Plan, TTIA has reviewed the facilities and land area.The Master Plan targets the next 5 to 10 years and continues with the development positioning for TTIA as set forth in the Conceptual Plan for Airport Park (COPAP):

  • Become an East Asia hub airport with balanced development of origin, destination and transfer for passengers and cargoes;
  • Provide a superior and convenient environment for passenger and cargo to assist the industrial development.
The area of Airport Zone is 1,731 ha, which is finalized by the 919th meeting of the Airport Park Special District Plan.
