9 As the scorching summer arrives, the construction of Terminal 3 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) is reaching a significant milestone with the ongoing column erection works. 200 metric tons. With the column works now finished, the next phase involves lifting the main trusses. Chief Supervisor Cheng Da-chun explained that the main trusses connecting the two columns consist of up to five steel sections, each requiring separate lifting. This stage presents a significant challenge as the lifting process can cause deformation, complicating the subsequent assembly. To overcome this, the engineering team will modify the lifting method on-site to address construction variables and minimize the impact of deformation. From Blueprint to Realization According to the construction plan, mobile platforms with built-in cranes will be installed on the floor to increase lifting efficiency after the erection of the first two columns. These towering columns signify the start of lifting works for Terminal 3's third floor and above, an essential step toward realizing its magnificent blueprint of "soaring wings." In mid-June 2023, just five days after the arrival of the structural steel components imported from Korea, the engineers, who had spent considerable time simulating the process, proceeded to verify the lifting plan on the construction site of Terminal 3. Operating from an aerial device, they carefully ensured the precise and secure attachment of the steel structures in their designated positions, documenting every step, detail, and measurement. Then, they decided to reinforce the central support structures and establish standard operating procedures before starting the crane operations. Challenging Construction: Large-Span Roof Supported by Soaring Columns The design of Terminal 3 features stunning large-span steel structures with an undulating, cloud-like ceiling, ingeniously partitioning the space and guiding the flow of people. The construction difficulty is considerably high, as the spacious and open design heavily relies on 16 colossal columns, 19 meters tall, and their interconnected trusses for support. Since late June, the crew has adopted a five-stage lifting method, working from the terminal's third-floor platform. They successfully erected the first column, weighing approximately ▲ 技師們在第三航廈工區進行吊裝作業。 Engineers conducting the column-lifting operations at Terminal 3 construction site. ▲ 主桁架施工作業模擬圖。 Simulation of construction operations for the main trusses. 機場動態Airport in Motion ▼ 第三航廈如飛鳥展翼般的偉岸外觀(示意圖)。 The appearance of the Terminal 3 building is like a bird spreading its wings.
