After August 2022, passengers arriving at TTIA were pleasantly surprised by a white sedan labeled "Autonomous Vehicle" navigating the airport premises. The vehicle, operating autonomously on the high-speed terminal roadways, covers a distance of 4.2 km between Terminal 1, Terminal 2, the cargo area, and administrative offices, looking just like any other car. As part of its digital transformation, TTIA and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) have worked together on the Airport Self-Driving Shuttle Test Project. The vehicle was tested to safely self-drive at a maximum speed of 50 km/h amidst highspeed traffic through various smart devices. Looking forward, TTIA has set sights on becoming Asia's first and the world's second airport to provide a self-driving shuttle service after Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in the United States. "The results will serve as a reference for future implementation of autonomous shuttle services as one step toward developing a smart airport," said Yang Wei-fuu, Chairman of Taoyuan International Airport Corp. (TIAC), during the result release day in May. Intelligent Services at TTIA TTIA is embracing digitalization with upgrades to the e-Gate Enrollment System and the implementation of WiFi 6 and 5G infrastructure. Additionally, to streamline the check-in and boarding process, the airport has introduced smart services and facilities such as mobile, online, and international-town check-in and self-baggage drop kiosks, along with a pilot program for the One ID biometric system. Meanwhile, TIAC sets a different theme each year, partnering with ITRI and other companies to carry out various pilot projects of POC(Proof of concept) such as delivery and cleaning service robots, an airport location-based app, and a footfall and environmental monitoring system. These initiatives will serve as a roadmap for future smart airport endeavors. Envisioning Tomorrow's Smart Airport What will the smart airport of the future look like? Green buildings have already become standard, and applying automation solutions to elevate the comfort and operational efficiency of post-pandemic travel services is emerging as a prominent trend of smart innovation for major international airports. In response to the rising demand for smart airports, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) has conducted various tests on smartification to guide facility planning, including a recently completed self-driving shuttle test. New e-Gate System accelerates the process of immigration clearance. International Currents

Operations News Since the border reopened, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) has seen daily passenger numbers increasing steadily from 22,000 in October 2022 to 104,000 in June of this year, with a recovery rate of 78% compared to the pre-pandemic peak of 133,000 passengers per day in 2019. The total passenger traffic volume is expected to hit 6.5 million during the two-month summer vacation, indicating a robust recovery. Flight routes in various regions are gradually resuming, with the current network now operating at over 70% of its pre-pandemic capacity. Notably, there has been a significant increase in travelers from Southeast Asia, North America, and Northeast Asia. 9 As the scorching summer arrives, the construction of Terminal 3 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) is reaching a significant milestone with the ongoing column erection works. 200 metric tons. With the column works now finished, the next phase involves lifting the main trusses. Chief Supervisor Cheng Da-chun explained that the main trusses connecting the two columns consist of up to five steel sections, each requiring separate lifting. This stage presents a significant challenge as the lifting process can cause deformation, complicating the subsequent assembly. To overcome this, the engineering team will modify the lifting method on-site to address construction variables and minimize the impact of deformation. From Blueprint to Realization According to the construction plan, mobile platforms with built-in cranes will be installed on the floor to increase lifting efficiency after the erection of the first two columns. These towering columns signify the start of lifting works for Terminal 3's third floor and above, an essential step toward realizing its magnificent blueprint of "soaring wings." In mid-June 2023, just five days after the arrival of the structural steel components imported from Korea, the engineers, who had spent considerable time simulating the process, proceeded to verify the lifting plan on the construction site of Terminal 3. Operating from an aerial device, they carefully ensured the precise and secure attachment of the steel structures in their designated positions, documenting every step, detail, and measurement. Then, they decided to reinforce the central support structures and establish standard operating procedures before starting the crane operations. Challenging Construction: Large-Span Roof Supported by Soaring Columns The design of Terminal 3 features stunning large-span steel structures with an undulating, cloud-like ceiling, ingeniously partitioning the space and guiding the flow of people. The construction difficulty is considerably high, as the spacious and open design heavily relies on 16 colossal columns, 19 meters tall, and their interconnected trusses for support. Since late June, the crew has adopted a five-stage lifting method, working from the terminal's third-floor platform. They successfully erected the first column, weighing approximately ▲ 技師們在第三航廈工區進行吊裝作業。 Engineers conducting the column-lifting operations at Terminal 3 construction site. Simulation of construction operations for the main trusses. The appearance of the Terminal 3 building is like a bird spreading its wings.

"At TIAC, we believe in serving our passengers," said TIAC Chairman Yang Wei-fuu at the ceremony as he credited the joint efforts of all colleagues for TTIA's impressive performance in the ACI/ASQ and Skytrax rankings over the past few years. This year, a new award category, Epidemic Prevention Models, was added to honor those who stood bravely at the forefront and made significant contributions to epidemic prevention during the pandemic. Kind-Hearted Driver Assists Elderly Couple with Their Luggage Li Tai-jun, a driver who voluntarily joined the anti-epidemic taxi fleet, once transported an elderly couple in their 80s returning from the United States to their hometown Qijin, Kaohsiung, arriving after 2 a.m. at their home - an old apartment without an elevator. Despite feeling exhausted after a long day of driving, Li couldn't leave them stranded and, in an act of kindness that touched them deeply, assisted the couple with their five large suitcases to the 4th floor. A Patient Helper for Transit Passengers Huang Yi-jun, an officer of the Special Duty Brigade, Border Affairs Corps, National Immigration Agency, is hailed for handling unexpected incidents involving international passengers with empathy and compassion. With Huang's patient assistance, a German woman with dementia who became confused and refused to board her connecting flight at TTIA, as well as an Indonesian man who lost his passport while intending to transit to the United States for a new job and a fresh start, were both able to board their flights and reach their intended destinations. A Proactive Provider for Traveler Needs As an exclusive VIP receptionist at Huan Yu VIP Terminal, Zeng Min-you always proactively identifies travelers' needs and provides them with solutions. Once, he noticed an elderly couple near Gate D2, looking around and seeming confused. Zeng approached them and found them looking for the Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 2 but went in the wrong direction. Aware that walking back would take more than ten minutes, he drove them to the escalator below the Plaza Premium Lounge and guided them to the correct location. Going forward, all partners from the Airport Service Alliance will continue to uphold the spirit of service, enhance their professionalism, and create memorable experiences for passengers. Zeng Min-you has an electric vehicle driver's license due to work needs. Airport in Motion

Taoyuan International Airport Corp. (TIAC) is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To this aim, TIAC has invited 85 partners to sign a memorandum of understanding pledging to collectively reduce carbon emissions and pursue the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4 certification. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) has achieved an annual reduction of one million metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 82 Daan Forest Parks, as Chairman Yang Wei-fuu proudly announced. This outstanding achievement has garnered international recognition, including the ACI Green Airport Recognition and ACA Level 3 Optimization. Accelerating Net Zero Through Circular Economy As net zero has become a key trend for sustainable industrial development, airports, known for their high energy consumption, must shift the focus from "carbon reduction" to "circular economy" to accelerate progress toward achieving net-zero goals by 2050. "A successful circular economy is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable planet," emphasized Chairman Yang Wei-fuu. Moving forward, TTIA and its partners are dedicated to creating a sustainable airport by transitioning toward a circular economy that utilizes resources effectively. TIAC and partner representatives sign the MoU for collective carbon reduction efforts (Chairman Yang Wei-fuu, center, and CEO Fan Hsiao-lun, 7th from the left).
